Sensitizing Adolescent Boys in Rural Telangana
Date: 2018 - 2020
Location: Telangana, India
During my time at VOICE4Girls from 2018 to 2020, I spearheaded the Boys4Change initiative, a program designed to sensitize adolescent boys on crucial gender issues. The goal was to foster 'gender ambassadors'—boys who would support their peers, especially adolescent girls, in challenging patriarchy and becoming allies for gender equality. The program was delivered through a camp format, with two primary modules: Fireflies and Supernova. Each module was structured to be engaging, using experiential learning techniques to explore gender roles, rights, and leadership.
Program Structure: Modules Covered
-
Fireflies: Introduction to Gender Concepts
-
Gender in Action: Boys learned about the concept of gender and its impact on personal identity and relationships.
-
Healthy Relationships: Understanding consent, respect, and empathy in relationships.
-
Rights and Responsibilities: Boys were introduced to gender rights and how to advocate for equality.
-
Future Planning: Empowering boys to make informed decisions about education and life goals.
-
-
Supernova: Building Gender Ambassadors
-
Leadership Skills: Campers were encouraged to take on leadership roles to promote gender equality.
-
Violence and Gender: Boys learned to identify and respond to different forms of gender-based violence.
-
Gender Privilege and Power: A deep dive into the dynamics of gender privilege and societal power structures.
-
My Rights, My Responsibilities: Reinforcing their understanding of gender rights and their responsibilities as gender ambassadors.
-
Approach:
-
Interactive Camps: Two-week residential camps during summer and winter where boys are immersed in gender sensitization activities.
-
Peer Leadership: Boys become peer leaders, challenging stereotypes and acting as allies to girls.
-
Skill-building: Integrating life skills such as communication, problem-solving, and leadership with gender concepts.
Outcome: Boys are empowered to become active advocates for gender equality, influencing their communities to foster inclusivity and break down gender-based barriers.
After Boys4Change, I developed the Oorja Program, designed for young women in tier two and tier three cities. This program equips women with essential knowledge, leadership skills, and tools to become career-ready, helping them navigate societal challenges and gender barriers while pursuing their professional aspirations.
